| NATURE OF WORK
This is highly responsible professional level work in communicating and promoting the activities, services and programs of the Department of Human Services (DHS).
An employee in this class is the official DHS Spokesperson to the media and general public. This employee is responsible for consistently promoting the services and programs that DHS provides to Miami-Dade County's multicultural community. Responsibilities include strengthening professional relationships with community organizations; developing public relations campaigns; coordinating all public statements on behalf of the Department to the media, as directed by the department director; and disseminating vital information to the public via the press. The incumbent must understand all critical issues affecting the Department, as well as be proactive in communicating important information and resources available to the community. General direction is received from the Department Director who holds the incumbent responsible for the professional management of desired departmental marketing goals and objectives.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Plans and directs the public affairs activities for the Department of Human Services.
Develops and strengthens professional relationships with community organizations and key dignitaries.
Develops public relations campaigns; and coordinates all public statements on behalf of the Department to the media.
Develops positive news coverage and ensures that accurate information is disseminated regarding the department.
Coordinates official stories and media releases; coordinates and responds to public records requests; and responds to public email requests.
Writes and disseminates press releases to the media.
Maintains close contact with representatives of the media.
Services the needs of the Director's Office by granting interviews to radio, TV and print media in an effort to educate the public on the many services and programs DHS provides to key targeted populations.
Coordinates television, radio and print media interviews in an effort to promote the Department.
Receives and responds to public information requests.
Represents the Department Director at numerous events to pro-actively promote the work of DHS.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of the principles and practices of journalism and public relations.
Thorough knowledge of the organization and operation of the Department of Human Services.
Thorough knowledge of the inner workings of the media, as well as a good understanding of the human services field, social trends and community needs.
Thorough knowledge of the inner workings of government and the needs of the media.
Thorough knowledge of technical skills such as writing, editing, in an effort to produce informational blurbs about DHS services and programs to the general public.
Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally, in writing as well as on radio and TV interviews.
Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously, while planning for the future.
Ability to balance the inner workings of government and the needs of the media.
Ability to use judgment and discretion in disseminating information to the media.
