Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Planning, Historic Preservation or a related field.

NATURE OF WORK

This is professional and specialized work in the development of an historic preservation program for the County.

Employees in this class are responsible for assisting in the formulation and development of a County historic preservation plan. Responsibilities include research and writing of the survey publication, documentation and verification of properties being designated as worthy of preservation and conducting research pertaining to National Register nominations. Duties involve assisting and advising local governments and various other organizations concerning historical preservation problems and activities. Supervision is received from a professional or administrative superior who assigns work priorities and projects and reviews work for satisfactory achievement of objectives.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Prepares portions and sections of the Historic Preservation Survey; performs research to assure historic accuracy of text and verify historical facts included in the survey publication including dates, events and personalities; develops accurate footnote citations and bibliographical data.

Researches, documents and verifies properties being designated as worthy of preservation under the Historic Preservation Ordinance.

Receives, reviews, researches and documents properties nominated to the National Register of Historic Places and verified historical accuracy; provides research assistance to individuals pertaining to National Register nominations.

Provides advice and assistance to municipalities in the development of local preservation programs, historic preservation ordinances or specific preservation projects; provides historical research as required.

Provides historical research to individuals and private organizations for historical preservation projects as needed.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of research methods and techniques pertaining to local historical developments.

Considerable knowledge of the sources and availability of current information in the field of historical preservation.

Knowledge of journalistic principles and practices.

Knowledge of the planning, composing and writing of interesting historical preservation material.

Ability to plan and carry out historical research effectively.

Ability to compile and evaluate historic preservation information.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relations with superiors, officials of private organizations and the public.
