Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Anthropology, Planning, Architecture, Historic Preservation, or a related field. One year of professional experience in historic preservation is required.

NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced professional and specialized work in the development of an historic preservation program for the county.

Employees in this class are responsible for assisting in the formulation and administration of a county preservation plan primarily through surveys of historical, architectural and archeological sites. Responsibilities include planning, supervising and participating in the work of employees engaged in historical research activities, excavating archeological sites and preserving historical artifacts. Duties involve assisting and advising local governments and various other organizations concerning historical preservation problems and activities. Supervision is exercised over subordinate professional and specialized employees and volunteer workers who assist with various phases of research and excavation work. Supervision is received from a professional or administrative superior who assigns work priorities and projects, and reviews work for satisfactory achievement of objectives.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Establishes archeological survey program priorities and methodology; locates and evaluates archeological sites; supervises and participates in excavations and in the cleaning, sorting and classifying of all artifacts.

Communicates verbally and in writing with various individuals and groups concerning archeological sites and locally found artifacts; provides presentations to schools, civic groups and museums.

Participates in the development of a county preservation plan to insure the maintenance and effective management of the county's archeological resources; reduces the impact on endangered sites by recovering and recording artifactual data; coordinates site preservation plans with developers and planners; updates archeological site survey data.

Plans research strategies and supervises employees engaged in historical research activities; coordinates historical research with architectural surveyor.

Prepares budget proposals and periodic grant reimbursement reports; prepares grant applications; schedules preservation workshops and participates in discussions; assists in developing the computerization of historic survey data.

Participates in development of a comprehensive preservation manual; assists in the formulation of a county preservation plan and in coordination of related plans of municipalities.

Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates; authorizes leave and overtime; counsels subordinates on job related problems; evaluates and rates employee performance.

Performs related work as required.

Considerable knowledge of the goals and objectives of an historic preservation program.

Considerable knowledge of planning, organizing and implementing historical and archeological survey programs.

Considerable knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of archeology.

Knowledge of the planning, composing and writing of interesting historical preservation material.

Knowledge of the sources and availability of current information in the field of historical preservation.

Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.

Ability to provide effective assistance in the development and administration of a historical preservation program.

Ability to plan and carry out historical research effectively.

Ability to locate and evaluate the archeological significance of historic sites.

Ability to compile and evaluate historic preservation data.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing.

Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, supervisors, contractors, developers and the general public.
