Fire Department Graphics & Communications Specialist
Minimum Qualifications
Completion of 60 semester credits with a major in Graphic Arts, Graphic Design or a related field. Two years of experience in advertising, graphics design, printing or related experience are required.

NATURE OF WORK

This is professional and technical work coordinating art design and communications projects in the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department.

An employee in this class is responsible for supervision and administration of departmental graphics design and communications projects. Emphasis of the work is on coordinating development of art, design and related communications projects with division chiefs, offices and bureaus. Duties include supervising the work of outside artists, designers and subcontractors, developing and administering procedures for production of final products and campaigns, and assuring presentation of a consistent department image to the public. The incumbent exercises independent judgment in development and completion of art design concepts, and in coordinating work with department offices and outside contractors. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who reviews work for professional quality of completed projects.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Coordinates art design and related communications projects; develops formats for posters, flyers, folders, booklets, brochures, dedications, advertisements, charts, multi-media presentations, stationary, clip sheets, television public service announcements, reports and promotional campaigns.

Plans projects for development of department campaigns; supervises all phases of artistic development from conceptual layout to camera-ready mechanicals.

Develops procedures for completion of final art designs and communication products including purchase requisitions, work orders, production of art work, typesetting and printing; coordinates work with vendors, typesetters, engravers and manufacturers; consults with printers to choose stocks, ink, photographic media, check proofs and monitor printing process.

Develops design concepts for size, placement and positioning of official Fire logo for presentation to the community.

Presents art design and communication concepts and provides advice concerning designs, processes and execution.

Coordinates departmental orders for various commercial art, drafting and communications media, and supplies.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of methods, practices and materials used in layout for reproduction and printing.

Considerable knowledge of graphic art design.

Knowledge of advanced graphic art techniques pertinent to departmental operations.

Knowledge of basic principles of drafting.

Knowledge of departmental administrative policies, procedures and practices.

Ability to advise professional personnel on a variety of appropriate graphic designs.

Ability to coordinate graphic arts design projects through design, production and execution phases.

Ability to develop art design concepts from inception to final completion.

Ability to maintain effective inter and intra-departmental relationsships.
