| NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced administrative and supervisory work in inmate property management for the Corrections and Rehabilitation Department. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising geographically dispersed inmate property room operations at various correctional facilities on a seven-day twenty-four hour basis. Responsibilities include establishing and enforcing property room policies and procedures, overseeing the daily process of purge and disposal of property, planning for future property room operations, overseeing the resolution of inmate claims and investigations, training subordinates in customer service techniques, and preparing annual budget estimates. The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment in directing the operations of inmate property rooms in accordance with established procedures and regulations. Supervision is exercised over a large staff of property custodians assigned to various shifts and various correctional facilities. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who reviews work through personal conferences and written reports for effective management of departmental inmate property room activities.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Plans, assigns and reviews the work of a large staff of inmate property custodians engaged in the receipt, storage and release of prisoner personal property and money at various correctional facilities on a seven-day twenty-four hour basis. Establishes and revises policies and procedures for the operations of inmate property rooms throughout the department. Ensures that inmate property rooms are operated in accordance with departmental rules and regulations and that property losses are minimized. Oversees the daily process of purge and disposal of inmate property. Plans for changes in existing inmate property room activities and for future property room operations; prepares annual budget requirements and estimates. Oversees and follows-up on inmate claims and investigations in a timely manner. Maintains working relationships with officials of other County departments concerning property issues and records retention requirements. Provides training to subordinates in customer service orientation and in departmental policies and procedures for inmate property room operations. Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates; authorizes leave and overtime; evaluates and rates employee performance. Performs related work as required.

Thorough knowledge of the receipt, storage and release of inmate personal property and money. Thorough knowledge of departmental rules, regulations and procedures pertaining to inmate property room operations. Considerable knowledge of the principles of management and business administration. Considerable knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Considerable knowledge of detailed inventory recordkeeping practices and procedures. Knowledge budget preparation, justification and administration. Ability to plan and direct operations of geographically dispersed inmate property rooms in accordance with established policies and procedures. Ability to devise and install inmate property room policies and procedures. Ability to assure adequate staffing for multi-shift multi-location inmate property room operations.
