| NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced administrative and supervisory work in indigency determination for the Administrative Office of the Courts. An employee in this class is responsible for supervising subordinates engaged in interviewing inmates and defendants to determine indigency. Responsibilities include developing and implementing program procedures, participating in interview processes, conducting financial background investigations, summarizing information for presentation to judges, and developing narrative and statistical reports. The incumbent exercises independent judgment in organizing, directing and coordinating indigency screening activities. Supervision is exercised over administrative and clerical employees engaged in making indigency determinations or serving in support capacities. Supervision is received from an administrative superior who reviews work through personal conferences and written reports for achievement of desired goals and objectives.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinate administrative and clerical employees engaged in making indigency determinations or serving in support capacities. Develops and implements new procedures for the indigency program; provides training to employees in indigency policies and procedures. Participates in the interviewing of inmates and defendants to determine indigency. Conducts financial background investigations by accessing information found in property tax files, Department of Motor Vehicle files, and credit service agencies. Summaries information for presentation to judges for a final decision on indigency. Supervises the development of narrative and statistical reports. Maintains working relationships with judges, defendants, inmates, public defenders and judicial officials. Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates; authorizes leave and overtime; evaluates and rates employee performance. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of policies, procedures and regulations pertaining to indigency determination in the Administrative Office of the Courts.
Considerable knowledge of criminal operations and related policies and procedures at the Administrative Office of the Courts. Considerable knowledge of the sources and availability of financial information concerning inmates and defendants. Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices. Knowledge of records, forms and reports used in the area of assignment. Knowledge of public relations principles and techniques. Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to conduct interviews with inmates and defendants and obtain required information. Ability to prepare reports for presentation to judges concerning findings of indigency investigations. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, verbally and in writing. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with inmates, defendants, subordinates, superiors and a variety of court officials.
