Landside Equipment Operator
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED. One year of experience in operating tow truck equipment to include dealing with the general public and owners of towed, improperly parked, or disabled vehicles is required. Must possess a CDL/Class C. Duties require assisting stalled motorists, towing unattended or abandoned vehicles and performing preventive maintenance on tow truck equipment. Applicants qualifying for employment with the Miami-Dade Aviation Department will be subject to extensive security screening, including but not limited to fingerprint checks, employment verification and such other procedures as may be mandated by federal law. The security clearance required by the federal law is a continuing condition of employment.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled work in the operation of tow truck equipment at Miami International Airport.

Employees in this class are responsible for operating tow truck equipment in the ground transportation area to tow illegally parked or disabled vehicles. Duties include coordinating the towing of illegally parked vehicles with police, record keeping and general maintenance of tow truck and some judgment and tact is required in dealing with the public. Supervision is received from a superior who reviews work through personal conferences, observations and review of records and reports for satisfactory completion of assigned responsibilities.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Operates tow truck equipment used for towing improperly parked and disabled vehicles.

Determines and implements the correct procedure for disconnecting linkage and towing vehicles; uses tow bars, tow chains, hoist and sling to tow vehicles.

Identifies and records tag number, date, method of entry, damages and defects before and after tow, and charges for towed vehicles.

Supplements police enforcement activities by towing improperly parked vehicles from terminal and parking facilities; exercises tact and diplomacy in dealing with the owners of such vehicles.

Provides assistance to airport motorists experiencing automotive breakdowns; opens doors of locked vehicles using special tools.

Services tow trucks and related equipment with oil, water, air and fuel.

Maintains a daily operations log of on duty time, tow activity, motorist assistance calls, out of service time, fueling and related activities.

Attends court proceedings and testifies in court as necessary.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics of tow truck equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to the operation of tow truck equipment.

Knowledge of landside operating procedures and departmental rules and regulations.

Knowledge of the geography of Miami International Airport including public access road network, building locations and the location of public and private facilities.

Some knowledge of record keeping procedures.

Some knowledge of tow truck equipment maintenance.

Some knowledge of public relations principles and techniques.

Ability to operate tow truck equipment and two-way radios.

Ability to follow established safety procedures to insure safe tow truck equipment operation.

Ability to make adjustments and perform minor maintenance on two truck equipment.

Ability to deal tactfully and effectively with the public.

Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions.

Ability to prepare simple reports and maintain routine logs.

Skill in the operation of tow truck equipment.
