W & S GIS Graphics Technician 2
Minimum Qualifications
High school. Two years of experience using computer-assisted mapping or computer-assisted design software are required. Completion of computer-assisted mapping or computer-assisted design coursework may substitute for the required experience on a month-per-month basis.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced technical work creating, reviewing and manipulating maps, photos and graphs for the Miami-Dade Water & Sewer Department.

Employees in this class update atlas pages using a Geographic Information System (GIS) program and assist field crews with the location and referencing of valves and hydrants. Responsibilities include designing atlas pages tailored to the work of the leak surveying crews; assisting field crews with the location and reference of valves and hydrants; creating, reviewing and analyzing leak detection survey graphs; and maintaining databases of work tickets and location clearances. Work differs from that found in the W & S GIS Graphics Technician 1 classification in that incumbents are responsible for the development of graphic arts projects and assisting professional staff and supervisors in the illustration and presentation of special projects. Supervision is received from a technical superior who evaluates the accuracy, quality and quantity of work through observation and review of work.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Create, review and manipulate maps, photos and graphs; update atlas pages via the GIS program; collect information for the referencing of valves.

Work on special projects for leak surveyors; design atlas pages tailored to deployment crews to include placing numbered dots on each point of deployment and laminating each sheet to make it more durable and easier for the technicians in the field to use.

Assist field crews with the location and referencing of valves and hydrants; consult the as-built for further details of specific problematic areas; custom print atlas pages and maps according to user needs.

Create, review and analyze leak detection survey graphs; charge and give proper daily maintenance to loggers and other leak detection equipment; program loggers using advance specification of time, quantity, length and intervals of recordings; download and analyze graphs from loggers in search of potential leaks; create sketches for the leak survey units.

Distribute work tickets via e-mail or fax to the appropriate assistant superintendent daily; maintain database of all work tickets; assist with the incorporation of work ticket photos into the database.

Request location clearances for the job areas when digging equipment are needed; distribute completed clearance forms to the technical supervisor with the corresponding graphs; maintain database of all location clearances received and distributed.

Utilize advanced image and graphics software; design covers for projects and presentations; recover and improve image quality on old scanned documents; create and update forms.

Create and analyze graphs for monthly reports; design and create artwork associate with reports; assist in assembling of monthly reports.

Clean and calibrate print shop equipment; ensure a safe and adequate storage of the office/print shop equipment and all reports created.

Perform related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of the maintenance of computer databases.

Knowledge of the computer software used in Geographic Information Systems.

Ability to read as-builts, maps and blue prints.

Ability to create and manipulate maps, photos and graphs.

Ability to create, review and analyze leak detection survey graphs.

Ability to utilize advanced image and graphics software to design covers for projects and presentations, create and update forms and recover and improve image quality on old scanned documents.

Ability to create and analyze graphs used for reports.

Ability to design and create art work for reports and presentations.

Ability to clean and calibrate print shop equipment.
