Farm Supervisor
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school. GED or high school equivalence is acceptable. One year of agricultural experience including supervision of farm workers is required.

NATURE OF WORK

This is large scale supervisory work in conducting a varied agricultural program at a major County juvenile detention facility.

The Farm Supervisor is responsible for the planting, cultivating, harvesting and distribution of vegetable crops, poultry and livestock, orchard and related agricultural activities, designed to assist in the rehabilitation of youthful detainees of the County Children's Home. Work requires technical and supervisory responsibility for all phases of the farm program. Duties are performed with considerable independence in responsible technical and planning matters; professional advice and guidance are received in the techniques of supervising children engaged in farming activities. All work is performed under the general supervision of an administrative superior who examines work schedules, observes farm activities in progress and evaluates the behavioral progress of adolescents engaged in the activity. Supervision is exercised over the detainees engaged in agricultural work by demonstrating proper farming methods and observation of results achieved in the form of satisfactory agricultural production.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Supervises the vocational training and work of unskilled detailed adolescents in the operation of varied crop production, harvesting and packing, farm equipment operation, poultry and livestock care and feeding.

Supervises and plans the technical operation and maintenance of a large farm including land clearing and preparation, fertilizing, planting seeds and seedlings, cultivation, irrigation, insect control, crop harvesting, packing and transportation; some landscaping, including sod and ornamental plant growth is included in the program.

Operates and maintains through subordinates, farming equipment, including trucks, tractors and implements, pumps, sprayers and hand tools used in all phases of farming.

Maintains public relations with civic, fraternal and religious groups who have expressed interest in youth rehabilitation; accepts the donation of various supplies and equipment for the farming operation; on invitation sends supervised crews of detainees to other farms to harvest crops donated to the Children's Home.

Operates through subordinates washing, sorting, packing and distribution of produce to other County installations.

In cooperation with the County Agricultural Agent, conducts experimental and demonstration projects relative to the farm operation; performs soil tests, prescribes fertilizer and insecticide requirements, devises methods of produce harvesting, preparation and packing.

Maintains records of farm production, yield per acre, market values of products; prepares reports of activities and appropriate budget estimates.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of modern agricultural principles, practices and techniques of volume farming in a sub-tropical climate.

Considerable knowledge of the maintenance and operation of modern farm machinery.

Some knowledge and understanding of the goals of juvenile supervision, training and rehabilitation in a therapeutic setting.

Ability to plan, implement and supervise the work of subordinates and crews of detainees in a manner conducive to productivity and the concepts of juvenile rehabilitation.

Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with farmers, suppliers, social workers and the general public.

Ability to keep records, prepare reports and express one's self clearly and concisely.
