| NATURE OF WORK
This is supervisory work in general labor operations.
An employee in this class typically supervise the work of medium-sized laboring and equipment operating crews. Duties assigned require specific knowledges and skills related to maintenance and construction assignments. These positions are distinguished from the lower class of Labor Supervisor 1 in that they involve more responsibility in supervising larger crews, anticipating work assignments, patrolling their assigned area for maintenance needs, and characteristically received less supervision. Incumbents exercise judgment and make decisions within the scope of their specific assignments. Assignments are received in oral or written form and work is subject to inspection and review in process and upon completion by immediate supervisor.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Supervises routine highway maintenance work such as patching asphaltic and concrete roads; checks road to see where repairs are needed and assigns patchmen to various areas; personally operates spreader box or truck as needed.
Assigns crew to various locations and coordinates their work in moving trees and clearing road right-of-way; checks roads in area as well as canal banks for wash-outs, cave-ins and other public hazards; reports hazards to superior with suggestions for action.
Supervises a crew of laborers and equipment operators engaged in various construction projects relating to parks maintenance, such as grading of roads and streets, installation of signs, clearing of roadways and road patching.
Supervises a medium-sized crew working on various causeway maintenance activities such as repairing signs, road repair, painting of guard rails, repairing toll house doors and windows and lubricating electric motors and gears.
Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Considerable knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and techniques used in general labor operations and knowledge of the special techniques of road or bridge maintenance.
Knowledge of the occupational hazards and necessary safety precautions applicable to laboring work.
Knowledge of the maintenance requirements of basic hand tools and simple automotive equipment.
Some knowledge of effective supervisory techniques.
Ability to secure a Florida State driver's license if required by assignment.
Ability to lay out and supervise the work of a moderately large group of laborers and equipment operators in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.
Ability to anticipate routine maintenance needs.
Ability to understand and transmit oral and written instructions.
Ability to keep simple records and make simple reports.
Physical strength and agility sufficient to work long hours out-of-doors and occasionally under adverse weather conditions.
