Ironworker Supervisor
Minimum Qualifications
Graduation from an accredited high school. GED or high school equivalence is acceptable. Two years of experience in performing ironwork/welding at the journeyman level are required.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is skilled supervisory work in erection and installation of steel and iron work in construction activities at various county construction sites.

Employees in this class lay out, assign and supervise the work of contract labor crews comprised of journeymen, semi-skilled and unskilled laborers engaged in steel and ironwork construction projects. Work involves development of work methods and procedures, interpretation of blueprints, computation of material take-offs and costs, supervision of work in progress and inspection of work upon completion. Instructions are received from construction or architectural supervisors verbally, normally accompanied by blueprints. Considerable independence of action is employed in devising work methods. Work is performed under the supervision of a construction supervisor who inspects work upon completion for compliance with blueprint requirements.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Plans, assigns and reviews the work of subordinates engaged in the erection and installation of steel reinforcements, railings, balusters, service ladders, fire escapes, catwalks, fences, gates, gratings and other steel or iron structural devices.

Supervises placement and fixing of reinforcement rods in concrete structures; cuts rods with torch or shears; adjusts position after pour.

Supervises subordinate personnel in welding and re-bar operations; trains in safe operation of hand and power ironworking tools, cutters and drills; supervises routine maintenance for all equipment.

Consults with construction and architectural personnel regarding new installations and modifications to existing structures; assists in preparation of specifications of work to be done on contract.

Interprets blueprints and determines type, spacing and dimensions of planned installations; lays out and explains job to be done; inspects reinforcements, devices and installations to determine condition and assure quality.

Computes material take-offs, estimates cost and time for proposed jobs; keeps records and prepares reports; submits requisitions for supplies and equipment.

Makes recommendations regarding hiring, discipline and promotion of subordinates; approves employee leave; evaluates and rates performance.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS

Thorough knowledge of the standard tools, materials, methods and practices of the ironwork trade.

Thorough knowledge of the properties of ferrous, non-ferrous metals encountered in ironwork and steelwork.

Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the ironwork trade.

Knowledge of supervisory methods and procedures.

Ability to plan, assign, review and supervise the work of journeymen ironworkers, welders and helpers in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale.

Ability to make accurate estimates of cost, time and materials.

Ability to work from specifications, blueprints and oral and written instructions.

Skill in the use and care of tools, equipment and materials of the ironwork trade.
