Park Ranger
Minimum Qualifications
High school or GED. Six months of experience in security and protective service work are required. Must possess a Driver license. Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule. Must be able to walk, stand and/or ride a bicycle.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is security work in protecting and patrolling public property at Metrozoo, parks, and other park facilities.

Employees in this class are responsible for providing security on an assigned shift for patrons at various park facilities. Duties include patrolling areas of Metrozoo, various parks or other park facilities; assisting in all emergencies until arrival of police or fire officials; providing information to patrons; screening individuals requesting access to restricted areas and monitoring parking facilities; and providing for the security of County assets and safety of patrons and employees. Work is performed in accordance with established rules and regulations. Supervision is received from a shift supervisor who reviews work through personal conferences and written reports for the satisfactory completion of assigned responsibilities.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Provides security for developed areas of Metrozoo and the entire zoo complex; patrols the perimeter of the park; answers questions from zoo patrons concerning zoo facilities; ensures security of County assets and the animal collection and safety of patrons and employees.

Patrols parks and park facilities; provides assistance to park or park facility visitors in the proper and safe use of facilities; enforces park rules and regulations as required; assists in providing park visitors with positive recreation experiences.

Assists with emergency situations including assaults, auto thefts, vehicular accidents, and medical difficulties until the arrival of police and/or fire officials.

Conducts initial investigations and submits reports concerning incidents occurring in parks or other park facilities.

Escorts and ejects individuals unable to conduct themselves properly in accordance with park rules and regulations.

Screens employees, guests, sales people, media personnel, and others requiring or requesting access to work locations and restricted areas at Metrozoo; monitors entrance and ticket booth areas and patrols parking facilities to protect patrons and their vehicles.

Provides security for special events, concerts, corporate picnics, special exhibitsss, and other occasions.

Operates two-way radio equipment.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of the geographical layout of the Metrozoo complex and other parks and park facilities.

Knowledge of the security rules and regulations applicable to the area of assignment.

Knowledge of basic security practices and techniques.

Knowledge of public relations principles and techniques.

Ability to follow prescribed routines in performing security patrols.

Ability to react promptly and correctly in emergency situations.

Ability to prepare reports concerning shift occurrences.

Ability to deal tactfully and diplomatically with the public.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform assigned duties.
