Ocean Lifeguard Trainee
Minimum Qualifications
The ability to meet physical standards and successfully complete a swimming skills test are required. Prior to the interview, qualified applicants will be scheduled for a performance test which may include distance swim and run, simulated rescue, first aid, and artificial respiration practices and procedures. Must be 18 years of age by completion of training. Must meet Miami-Dade County physical standards, including vision standards of 20/40 in each eye uncorrected. Must be able to work days, nights, holidays, and weekends on a varied work schedule. Continued employment requires meeting all physical standards, successfully completing performance test and obtaining and maintaining all required certifications.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is lifeguard training work at County lakes or swimming pool facilities.

Employees in this class are responsible for participating in lifeguard training to become Pool/Lake Lifeguards. Duties include engaging in lifeguard training and rescue drills, reporting potential dangerous or hazardous situations, and assisting in maintaining aquatic facilities. Supervision is received from a superior who reviews training in progress and upon completion.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Participates in lifeguard training and rescue drills.

Observes and assists the Learn to Swim Program.

Reports potential physical hazards, unsafe conditions and patron complaints to staff members.

Assists in maintaining water, beach and deck areas; assists in cleaning restrooms, showers and locker rooms.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Knowledge of rules and regulations of the aquatic facility of assignment.

Knowledge of physical layout of the assigned aquatic facility.

Knowledge of potential dangerous or hazardous conditions at an aquatic facility.

Ability to learn approved lifeguarding and lifesaving practices and techniques.

Ability to swim.

Skill in swimming.
