| NATURE OF WORK
This is professional landscape design work in preparing plans, drawings, and specifications for the functional and aesthetic development of parks, recreational and related areas. A Landscape Architect 1 is responsible for designing and drafting landscape layouts, including types and location of trees, shrubs, and flowers as well as basic site development plans to serve specialized park and recreational needs. Work requires the use of creativity and imagination in the development of landscaping plans and beautification projects. All work is performed under the general direction of a professional superior who reviews work primarily for conformance with landscaping standards and departmental policies. Supervision may be exercised over subordinate drafting employees.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Designs and drafts plans for the grounds of new park areas and recreational facilities or designs landscaping modifications to existing facilities located throughout the metropolitan area; prepares specifications and estimates costs. Studies conditions of the site including such factors as drainage, topsoil, trees, rock formations and the design of planned or existing structures. Acts as consultant to an occasionally supervises the activities of personnel engaged in planting and transplanting trees, flowers, and shrubs. Coordinates the nursery stock supply with landscaping and planting needs; recommends the purchase of new landscape stock. Prepares specifications and requisitions for materials, supplies, seeds, bulbs, and trees; estimates costs, labor, time, and materials in connection with landscaping projects. Assists architectural and engineering personnel with plans for buildings, roads, and other structural features of parks in the interest of coordinating effective landscape design and preserving natural scenery. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the principles and practices of landscape architecture. Knowledge of the plant life of the local area including ornamental and hybrid species. Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools and practices used in the propagation, planting, transplanting, and cultivating of nursery stock in ornamental, natural, and formal gardens. Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices of horticulture, entomology, and plant pathology. Ability to plan and devise ornamental, natural, and formal landscaping designs. Ability to prepare detailed specifications and cost estimates for landscaping. Skill in the use of drafting instruments.
