Rail Vehicle Technician/ATP
Minimum Qualifications
High school. Three years of experience in the diagnosis, testing, repair and maintenance of electrical and electronic systems and subsystems are required. The MDTA classification of Rail Technician/ATP performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to the provisions of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Regulations. Preference will be given to applicants in the Transport Workers Union bargaining unit. Proof of education and work experience to meet minimum qualifications must be presented and will be verified.
Job Specifications
NATURE OF WORK

This is advanced skilled technical work in the inspection, repair and maintenance of automatic train protection equipment.

Employees in this class are responsible for inspecting, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining vehicle-borne automatic train protection equipment on an assigned shift in a public transportation system. Work involves the advanced application of the principles and techniques of electrical and electronic repairs and adjustments to train protection equipment onboard heavy rail vehicles. Employees follow written inspection procedures and exercise some independent judgment in the various technical phases of inspection, repair and maintenance of ATP equipment. Supervision is received from a technical superior who reviews work in progress and upon completion for satisfactory performance of equipment installed, repaired or maintained.

ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS

Conducts preventive maintenance inspections of the vehicle-borne portions of the automatic train protection subsystem.

Applies the principles and techniques of electrical and electronic repair to the diagnosis, repair, troubleshooting and maintenance of automatic train protection equipment.

Makes adjustments to train control equipment including ATP rack, receiver and decoder boards, pick-up antennas, vital and non-vital relays, and indicator circuits.

Follows written inspection procedures and utilizes test equipment to perform preventive maintenance including multimeters, ammeters, oscilloscopes, power supplies and chart recorders.

Troubleshoots and repairs electrical and electronic vehicle-borne equipment related to the safe operation of the train including propulsion, friction brake and door control subsystems.

Performs "C" inspections, ATP troubleshooting and repairs during mainline testing; performs dynamic testing of the decelerometer, verifies brake assurance relay drop off for the minimum brake rate, and verifies overspeed detection and brake rates.

Observes established safety practices and procedures applicable to the electrical and electronic trades and to work in a public transportation system.

Performs related work as required.

KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS

Considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of electricity and electronics as applied to automatic train protection equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of automatic train protection equipment.

Considerable knowledge of the systematic and special inspections required of automatic train protection systems.

Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools and materials of the electronic and electrical trades.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions required in working with automatic train protection systems and related subsystems in a public transportation system.

Knowledge of precision test equipment including multimeters, ammeters and oscilloscopes.

Ability to diagnose, repair and maintain vehicle-borne automatic train protection equipment and related subsystems.

Ability to diagnose and repair defects on hard wire logic circuits.

Ability to diagnose and repair defects on audio frequency electronic circuits.

Ability to read and understand schematics and wiring diagrams.

Ability to work a variety of hours and emergency shifts as required.

Ability to observe established safety practices and procedures.

Skill in the diagnosis of electrical and electronic malfunctions.

Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform assigned duties.
