| High school. Six months of mechanical or electrical maintenance and repair experience are required.The MDTA classification of Rail Vehicle Helper performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to the provisions of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Regulations. Preference will be given to applicants in the Transport Workers Union bargaining unit. Proof of education and work experience to meet minimum qualifications must be presented and will be verified. | |

| NATURE OF WORK
This is semi-skilled work assisting in the repair and maintenance of rail vehicle equipment. Employees in this class perform semi-skilled work in the inspection and preventive maintenance of rail vehicle equipment. Duties include inspecting minor mechanical and electrical systems, cleaning component boxes and related equipment, lubricating compressors and other items, and removing and replacing air filters, seat covers, fuses and other basic rail vehicle components. Assignments are generally received in verbal form and are usually specific as to the nature of work to be performed. Supervision is received from a technical supervisor who reviews work in progress and upon completion for satisfactory assistance in the repair and maintenance of rail vehicle equipment.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Inspects mechanical and electrical systems on rail vehicle equipment including couplers, draft gear, trucks and suspensions, and friction brakes. Cleans component boxes and related equipment including blow out motors, condensers, collector assemblies, aric shields, braking resistors, insulators, electrical coupler pins, door tracks and other items. Lubricates gearboxes, compressors, brake head hangers, circle door systems, contactors, magnetic valves and high speed couplings. Adjusts collector assemblies, brake systems, electrical contactors, door systems, pneumatic systems, battery fluid and other systems. Removes and replaces air filters, brake shoes, collector paddles, electrical contacts, seat covers, fuses and other basic components. Operates shop equipment including fork lifts, electric shop carts and pressure washer and pumps. Observes established safety practices and procedures pertaining to work with mechanical and electrical systems on rail vehicle equipment. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of the basic principles of mechanics, electricity and electronics as applied to rail vehicle equipment. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of mechanical and electrical repair work. Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of rail vehicle mechanical and electrical equipment.
Some knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of rail vehicle mechanical and electrical equipment. Ability to inspect rail vehicle mechanical and electrical systems and perform preventive maintenance tasks. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work various shifts. Ability to assist a journeyman mechanic or electrician in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of rail vehicle equipment. Ability to use tools, equipment and materials of the mechanical and electrical trades. Physical strength and agility sufficient to perform assigned duties.
