| High school diploma or GED. Two years of skilled experience in the diagnosis, repair and maintenance of electrical systems and equipment are required.The MDTA classification of Rail Vehicle/Electrician performs safety-sensitive functions and is subject to the provisions of the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) Drug and Alcohol Regulations. Preference will be given to applicants in the Transport Workers Union bargaining unit. Proof of education and work experience to meet minimum qualifications must be presented and will be verified. | |

| NATURE OF WORK
This is skilled technical work in the repair and maintenance of rail vehicle HVAC and electrical equipment. Employees in this class are responsible for inspecting, testing, troubleshooting, repairing and maintaining HVAC and electrical equipment installed in rail vehicles. Work involves the application of the principles and techniques of electrical repairs, testing and maintenance to rail vehicles electrical equipment including traction motors, couples, indicator circuits, vehicular doors, control circuits and electrical cable. Employees follow prescribed methods and procedures but are expected to exercise independent judgement regarding routine phases of repair and maintenance activities. Supervision is received from a technical superior who reviews work in progress and upon completion for satisfactory performance of equipment repaired or maintained.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Inspects, test, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains rail vehicles HVAC and electrical equipment and systems. Changes brushes in traction motors, repairs electro/pneumatic couples, repairs indicator circuits in the cab, repairs intercom systems and control circuits including wiring; replaces electrical wiring and electrical cable. Repairs vehicle doors including door circuits, door motors and lockout system. Reads and interprets schematic drawings, wiring diagrams and rail vehicle technical manuals. Uses various tools of the electrical trade to diagnose defects, affect repairs and perform preventive maintenance including multimeters, ammeters, oscilloscopes, refrigeration test gauges and vacuum pumps; braze and solders. Observes vehicle electrical system and devices in operation to expediently detect failures, determine causes and implement corrective action. Observes established safety practices and procedures applicable to the electrical trade. Participates in training programs and instructs helpers in electrical repair and maintenance tasks. Performs related work as required.

Considerable knowledge of the principles and theories of electricity as applied to rail vehicle electrical systems and equipment. Considerable knowledge of the electrical functioning of rail vehicle systems and equipment. Considerable knowledge of the standard practices, methods, tools, and materials of the electrical trade. Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety cautions of the electrical trade. Knowledge of the operating characteristics and maintenance requirements of rail vehicle electrical systems and equipment. Knowledge of precision electrical test equipment. Ability to inspect, diagnose and repair a variety of rail vehicle electrical equipment. Ability to read, interpret and understand blueprints, schematics, wiring diagrams and technical manuals. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions. Ability to work various shifts. Skill in the diagnoses of electrical malfunctions.
