| NATURE OF WORK
This is advanced professional artistic management work for the Center for the Fine Arts. An employee in this class is responsible for coordinating all activities relating to the physical presence of art objects at the Center for the Fine Arts. Responsibilities include developing procedures for processing and recording of all art loans to CFA, coordinating work with lenders, couriers, other exhibitors and government officials, supervising handling of all art deliveries and outgoing shipments, coordinating CFA traveling exhibitions, determining and contracting for conservation services, overseeing production of exhibition checklists, and initiating projects to improve safety and security of art work on loan to the CFA. The incumbent exercises considerable independent judgment and artistic expertise in the management of art loans from a variety of lenders. Supervision is exercised over a subordinate who provides assistance with all art deliveries and outgoing shipments. General supervision is received from an administrative superior who holds the incumbent responsible for the professional management of art loan operations.
ILLUSTRATIVE TASKS
Establishes and maintains contacts with special art packers, shippers, insurors, customs brokers and conservators to obtain the most cost-effective local, national and international services available. Sets standards for environmental conditions on premises and for high quality art handling, both in-house and by outside providers. Supervises subordinate responsible for assisting with all art deliveries and outgoing shipments, overseeing art handling staff, installing and dismantling exhibitions, preparing and processing documents, and performing related duties. Coordinates CFA-organized traveling exhibitions including liaison activities with exhibitors, insurors, packers, shippers and providers of special security services to ensure greatest protection of high-value property entrusted into CFA care; travels with exhibition to oversee handling in transit and deal with emergencies that may threaten the well-being of art objects. Determines, advises and contracts for conservation services; occasionally performs minor conservation or refurbishing of art work. Approves payments for shipping, insurance, conservation of art work lent to the CFA for exhibition, equipment and other services. Oversees production of exhibition checklists to ensure accuracy of identifying information, including spelling, grammar, foreign language words and names, and correct use of terminology and format or style of presentation.
Provides services of a clearinghouse for information on local art facilities. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Thorough knowledge of art handling equipment, techniques, methods and materials. Thorough knowledge of the management, processing and recording of art loans from a variety of art lenders. Considerable knowledge of artists and art historical periods. Considerable knowledge of domestic and foreign packers and shippers, insurance brokers and art conservators. Considerable knowledge of manual systems, forms and legal documents related to borrowing and lending art. Ability to manage the receiving, processing, recording, exhibiting and shipping of art work to ensure maximum security and safety of art objects. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with art conservators, shippers, insurors, packers and others involved in art loans. Ability to supervise subordinates in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale. Ability to ensure the accuracy of identifying information concerning art exhibitions. Ability to understand and exchange curatorial information.
