Lean Six Sigma - Orange Belt Classes

To obtain an Orange Belt, employees must be Yellow Belt-certified and attend 7 of the 9 classes from the Orange Belt and Blue Belt sections, along with completing class assignments. Yellow Belts and Green Belts not interested in pursuing a higher belt level are welcome to enroll on a per-class basis.

Voice of Customer (4 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification

Purpose: To learn about tools for gaining a better understanding of customer needs and requirements; specifically to help identify and understand customer needs and requirements so that County government can better meet them.

Objectives:

  • To understand the five fundamental quality elements
  • To understand how to identify Customer Valid Requirements from S.I.P.O.C. outputs
  • To understand the application of a customer requirements matrix

Outcome Indicators (4 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification

Purpose: To learn some best practices for identifying outcome measures, using line graphs and developing appropriate targets.

Objectives:

  • Review the basics of line graphs
  • Learn the different types of line graphs
  • Learn the six generally accepted target setting methodologies
  • Learn how to do benchmarking

Surveys (4 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification

Purpose: To understand how to develop, improve and utilize customer surveys.

Objectives:

  • Learn how to create survey questions using the affinity process
  • Learn about sampling methods and how to apply to surveying

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt Certification

Purpose: To understand how to effectively plan and implement data collection spreadsheets in order to properly analyze data and trigger improved performance.

  • To understand the components of a well-designed spreadsheet
  • Learn how to create a good data collection spreadsheet

Flowcharts (4 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt Certification

Purpose: To learn how to develop a process flowchart, its uses and qualitative analysis techniques that lead to improved performance.

Objectives:

  • Learn the flowchart construction rules and how to properly construct a good process flowchart
  • Learn how to use differing scales (macro vs. micro) of flowcharts
  • Learn techniques to effectively analyze a process flowchart

Root Cause (4 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification

Purpose: To learn how to determine and verify root causes, and how to base countermeasures on verified root causes.

Objectives:

  • Understand the sources of all root causes
  • Understand the difference between symptoms, secondary causes and root causes
  • Learn how to solve work problems with Simple Root Cause (SRC) Analysis
  • Learn how to determine root causes through Single Case Bore Analysis Fishbone Diagrams
  • Learn how to verify potential root causes
  • Learn how to use verified root causes as a launching point for developing countermeasures
  • Learn how to construct a Scatter Diagram

Creative Thinking (2 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification preferred

Purpose: To learn how to overcome barriers to creativity, how to enhance their creative/breakthrough thinking capability, and how to use creative/breakthrough thinking techniques to generate powerful, effective countermeasures.

Objectives:

  • To understand how to apply various creative thinking techniques for generating process improvements and other valuable ideas in the workplace
  • To be able to lead a creative thinking work session

Process Management (4 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification preferred

Purpose: To teach the principles of process management, the seven-step process management process, how to identify key process performance indicators, and how to achieve sustainable performance improvement by implementing an effective process control system.

Objectives:

  • Understand process management principles
  • Understand the 7-steps to create a process control system
  • Understand the three components of a process management system
  • Understand how to develop, implement and monitor an effective process control system consistent with the County’s performance management system

Introduction to Lean Analysis (4 hours)

Prerequisites: Yellow Belt or Green Belt certification

Purpose: To understand tools that can be used to increase process speed and minimize waste.

Objectives:

  • To understand the difference between Lean and Six Sigma
  • To learn how to read and construct a value stream map
  • To learn how to identify different kinds of process wastes
  • To learn additional tools to analyze and improve process efficiency
  • To understand the importance of involving front line employees in process improvement
