    Bird Road Corridor Study

Over the last year and a half, the Miami-Dade County Department of Planning and Zoning has been holding a series of public events as part of the Bird Road Corridor Study. The goal of this planning process is to develop a shared long-term vision for this major East/West corridor that is pedestrian friendly, visually cohesive, commercially vibrant and creates a unique identity for Bird Road.

On March 22, 2006 the Board of County Commissioners passed resolution No. R-564-06 to organize a charrette for the area around Bird Road that lies between the Palmetto Expressway and the Florida Turnpike. This legislation, brought forth by Commissioner Javier Souto, led to the creation of a Steering Committee whose members are all stakeholder’s in the community. The Steering Committee’s role is to guide the process of urban planning by encompassing the concerns and issues of the area. The first objective of the steering Committee was to identify limitations and problems that exist within the corridor. Next, the committee identified the attributes and potential strengths of the area. And finally, the committee began to focus on the actions necessary to allow the area to move in a positive direction.

As part of the work in progress, a Town Hall meeting and two-day Design Workshop were held at the West Dade Regional Library from September 23 through September 25, 2008 and were well attended by area residents, property and business owners representing a diverse cross section of the community. During the Design Workshop, the design team set up its studio at the West Dade Regional Library where the doors remained open to the public for two days. Throughout these two days, interested residents, property and business owners were able to observe and interact with the design team at work.  Work also continued in the months that followed the initial Town Hall meeting and Design Workshop.

Additional public meetings will be held in the upcoming months. The Department of Planning and Zoning encourages your participation!
