Airport District Station Honors Officer by Naming Gym in His Honor

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), will host a special ceremony on Monday, February 13,2017 at 11:00 a.m. at the Airport District Station, to pay tribute to Officer Mario Gutierrez for bravery and dedication to duty. The gym at the station will be named in his honor.

This is the latest honor for Officer Gutierrez, who on October 29, 2013, prevented a man from setting fire to a gas station at 2501 NW 42nd Avenue, near Miami International Airport. Officer Gutierrez prevented what would have unquestionably been a major explosion, by activating the station’s emergency shut-off valve and engaging the would-be arsonist. In the ensuing altercation, Officer Gutierrez was stabbed multiple times, but nevertheless managed to discharge his firearm, killing the subject.

He was hospitalized for several weeks after the incident.

Officer Gutierrez has been honored for his bravery and determination, by law enforcement and civic organizations. Last year he was one of 13 law enforcement officers from across the country, who were awarded the Medal of Valor.

MDPD Command Staff and Airport District officers will attend Monday’s ceremony to honor Officer Gutierrez.

Media is welcome to attend.
