CALEA On-site Assessment of the Miami-Dade Police Department

The Miami-Dade Police Department is scheduled for an on-site assessment to obtain re-accreditation with CALEA; the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies. To obtain this re-accreditation, a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence, agencies must comply with the best and most current police policies, procedures, and practices.

A team of assessors from CALEA will arrive at MDPD on August 1, 2016, to examine specific aspects of the department’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. MDPD is already nationally accredited through CALEA. Therefore, to receive state accredited status, it has to comply with only 87 additional Florida-based standards through the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc.

The two-member CALEA assessment team is comprised of Commander Lloyd Coward of the Federal Protective Service and Commander Gregg Jones, recently retired from the Lexington Police Department. Commander Coward is the team leader.

They will review written materials, interview individuals, and visit offices and other places where compliance can be observed. On completion of their review, the assessors will report to the full Commission, which will then decide if the MDPD has met the standard for a four-year re-accreditation.

As part of the on-site assessment, members of the community and agency employees are invited to offer comments at a Public Information Session on Wednesday, August 3, 2016, from 7:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., in the Miami-Dade Commission Chambers, located at, 111 N.W. 1 Street, 2nd floor, Miami, Florida.

The public agency employees are also invited to offer comments to the assessment team by calling (305) 715-5041 or (305) 715-5065 on Tuesday, August 2, 2016, between the hours of 1:00 P.M. and 4:00 P.M. Telephone comments and appearances at the Public Information Session are limited to 10 minutes and must address the agency’s ability to comply with CALEA’s standards.  Copies of the standards are available for review at the MDPD’s Professional Compliance Bureau. For an appointment, please call (305) 627-7100.

Anyone wishing to submit written comments about the MDPD’s ability to comply with the standards for accreditation may send them to the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, 13575 Heathcote Boulevard, Suite 320 Gainesville, Virginia 20155. Please copy the Professional Compliance Bureau at 18805 N.W. 27 Avenue, Miami Gardens FL 33056.

The CALEA Accreditation Program Manager for MDPD is Melenda Knox and the team members are Sgt. Catherine McPhee, Sgt. David Shanks and Ms. Fatima Remy.

A copy of the CALEA standards is available through MDPD’s Public Information and Education Bureau.
