Miami-Dade Police Department Seeks Re-Accreditation

Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation Inc. Conducts On-Site Assessment

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) is scheduled for an on-site assessment for the purpose of obtaining re-accreditation with the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (CFA). As administrators of the accreditation process, CFA requires agencies to comply with the best and most current police policies, procedures, and practices.

A team of assessors representing CFA will conduct a virtual assessment on August 25 - August 26, 2020, to examine specific aspects of MDPD’s policies and procedures, management, operations, and support services. Since the agency is already nationally accredited through the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, it only has to comply with approximately 112 additional Florida-based standards in order to maintain state accredited status. A copy of the standards is available through MDPD’s Public Information and Education Bureau.

For more information regarding CFA, or for persons wishing to offer written comments about MDPD’s ability to meet the standards of accreditation, please write: CFA, P.O. Box 1489 Tallahassee, FL 32302.

The Accreditation Manager for MDPD is Ms. Melenda Knox. The assessors will review written materials and interview individuals, ensuring compliance with the most current police policies, procedures and practices. The CFA assessment team is comprised of team leader Mr. Gary Robinson, Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, team members Chief Tina Chatmon of the Clay County Sherriff’s Office Detention Department, and Sergeant Frank Fuentes of the Coconut Creek Police Department.

Once the Commission’s assessors complete their review of the agency, they will report back to the full Commission, which will then decide if the agency is to receive accredited status. MDPD’s accreditation will be for three years. Verification by the team that MDPD meets the CFA’s standards is part of a voluntary process to maintain our accreditation—a highly prized recognition of law enforcement professional excellence.
