Hurricane Relief Is On The Way

Police Officer Assistance Trust

The Police Officer Assistance Trust (POAT) and dozens of Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) detectives will travel to north Florida to assist law enforcement officers affected by Hurricane Michael.

As Law enforcement works tirelessly to assist their community during this catastrophic event, they often leave their own families and place their own adversities on hold.  The POAT along with a group MDPD detectives will add another layer of personal assistance, bringing local officers peace of mind and letting them know that their families are being cared for, as they work long hours.

The responsibilities of POAT are twofold. First, to provide financial assistance to officers disabled in the line of duty, suffering from chronic or terminal illness, or the victim of some other catastrophic circumstance. Since 1989, the POAT has obtained funding through private and corporate donations, payroll deductions, and various events held throughout the year.  The POAT has paid, and will continue to pay, health care costs that insurance does not cover and other expenses when the need arises.  In all cases, financial assistance is given when all other means have been exhausted. Secondly, POAT provides educational assistance to the spouses and children of law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty in Miami-Dade County.

After Hurricane Andrew struck South Florida in August 1992, POAT stepped in to assist more than 900 officers whose homes and lives were devastated by the storm. Once again, the POAT is answering the call for help from our law enforcement community.  They depart with equipment and supplies that are useful in relief efforts to our fellow peace officers.  With the certainty that their homes and families are secure, these officers are able to continue helping their devastated community.

Please join us as we pray for the safe travels of those on their way to help our community guardian angels in need.
