Light Bill Scam

The Miami-Dade Police Department, Economic Crimes Bureau has received several cases that involve fraudulant activity regarding the victim's electric bill.  According to investigators, the subjects are calling victims and telling them their electricity bill is delinquent.  The victims are then warned that their electrical service will be discontinued unless they purchase pre-paid gift cards for varied amounts ranging from $150 to $500.  The subjects then call the victims for the account and PIN numbers from the cards.

Anyone who is contacted in regards to their electricity bill is urged to immediately contact their provider and speak to a company representative to verify their account status.  We urge the community never to provide personal information to anyone over the phone.
