At approximately 1:45 a.m., officers of the Kendall District along with Florida Highway Patrol responded to a vehicle fire and pulled an unconscious driver out to safety. Officers Yovani Sosa, Joseph Vallejos, Gepsy Perez and Edward Brochu responded to S.R. 826 and Bird Road to assist with a vehicle crash. As they arrived, they noticed the front of the vehicle was on fire. Officer Edward Brochu utilized his fire extinguisher in attempts to put out the fire while Officers Sosa, Vallejos and Perez began to rescue the driver, Mr. Luis Alamo. They observed Mr. Alamo unconscious and bleeding from the head and they began to pry the door that appeared to be jammed. Trooper Roberto Ortega arrived shortly thereafter and began assisting the four officers. The officers were able to open the door and safely extract Mr. Alamo from the vehicle. As the officers conducted their physical assessment, they observed that Mr. Alamo was suffering from a head injury and fractures to the lower extremities. Officer Sosa immediately immobilized Mr. Alamo's cervical spine and Officer Perez supported his lower extremities until Miami-Dade Fire Rescue arrived. Mr. Alamo was transported to Kendall Regional Trauma Center where his is listed in stable condition.
