Crime Scene Investigative Support Section
The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Crime Scene Investigative Support Section (CSISS) services the greater unincorporated Dade County area and 35 of the incorporated municipalities which also include the city of Miami and the city of Miami Beach (total population base circa 2.4 million).
The Crime Scene Investigations Unit (CSI) is responsible for detecting, collecting, preserving, and transporting evidence from crime scenes. The CSI Unit is primarily responsible for the processing crime scenes that are investigated by the Miami-Dade Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.
The Miami-Dade Police Department's CSISS provides support services in the form of crime scene processing, digital forensic and forensic imaging to departmental entities. The services are extended within Miami-Dade County to federal, state, and local agencies.
The Section is staffed by 51 full time personnel. The crime scene investigations section operates 24 hours/7 days a week and the Digital Forensic and Forensic Imaging Units operate 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday.
Forensic Imaging Unit
The Forensic Imaging Unit provides forensic, studio, and field photography, as well as digital imaging and enhancement of photographic images in support of the Department’s mission. The Unit maintains the photographic and digital mugshot image files for access by departmental, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The Unit also provides all departmental entities with photographic film and photo finishing. The Unit assists with Photographic Services, Support Services, and Forensic Art Services.
Photographic Services provides specialized evidence photography to Investigations, the Fingerprint Identification Section, Forensic Art Services, Crime Laboratory Bureau, and other law enforcement agencies upon request. Photographic Services assists with special events, awards ceremonies, historical events, and other occurrences or requests deemed appropriate. A recent addition of digital imagery is also available. Utilizing computer software programs, personnel can create composite digital images and enhance photo images.
Forensic Art Services
Forensic Art Services provides computer-generated or forensic artist renderings of subjects or witnesses involved in criminal investigations. Personnel can enhance photographs to assist in the identification of persons, vehicles, or articles involved in criminal investigations. They also have the ability to create two- and three-dimensional facial reconstructions of unidentified human remains that should bear a close resemblance to how the individual appeared in life. Lastly, they are able to alter the image of an individual in order to represent how that person has aged over a specific period of time.
Support Services provides support and clerical assistance to Photographic Services. Personnel coordinate records-management and warehouse requests for photographs for older cases that are no longer available in current records. They also provides counter support for departmental, municipal, federal, and state law enforcement personnel requesting booking photographs or assistance in compiling a photographic lineup.
Digital Forensic Unit
The DFU is responsible to provide a variety of digital forensic laboratory and crime scene support services to the CSISS and to the greater municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies of Miami-Dade County. The DFU provides objective digital forensic laboratory examination services, crime scene response services (in matters involving digital evidence), and digital network forensic services.
It provides objective examination services on digital evidence seized pursuant to administrative investigations. It provides data recovery services to the MDPD during incidents of catastrophic failure and/or data corruption. It is an integral part of the critical incident response team for the Miami-Dade County Information Technology Department, Enterprise Security Office. It provides consultation services and education to the investigators of Miami-Dade County, as well as for the Offices of the State Attorney, United States Attorney, MDPD Legal Bureau, and the County Attorney's office.
The DFU is an active partner laboratory providing digital forensic services for the United States Secret Service, Miami Electronic Crime Task Force, and the Internet Crimes against Children Task Force, pursuant to Memorandums of Understanding existing between the task forces and the MDPD.Back to Top Page Last Edited: Fri Jan 2, 2015 2:47:06 PM
