The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Crime Scene Investigative Support Section (CSISS) services the greater unincorporated Dade County area and 35 of the incorporated municipalities which also include the city of Miami and the city of Miami Beach (total population base circa 2.4 million).

The Crime Scene Investigations Unit (CSI) is responsible for detecting, collecting, preserving, and transporting evidence from crime scenes. The CSI Unit is primarily responsible for the processing of crime scenes that are investigated by the Miami-Dade Police Department Criminal Investigations Division.

The Miami-Dade Police Department's CSISS provides support services in the form of crime scene processing, digital forensic and forensic imaging to departmental entities. The services are extended within Miami-Dade County to federal, state, and local agencies.

The Section is staffed by 55 full time personnel. The Crime Scene Investigations Unit operates 24 hours/7 days a week. The Digital Forensic and Forensic Imaging Units operate 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday to Friday and the Body Worn Camera Unit operates 8 a.m. to 10 p.m., Monday to Friday.

The Forensic Imaging Unit provides forensic, studio, and field photography, as well as digital imaging and enhancement of photographic images in support of the Department’s mission. The Unit maintains the photographic and digital mugshot image files for access by departmental, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies. The Unit also provides all departmental entities with photographic prints and media disc copies. The Unit assists with Photographic Services, Support Services, and Forensic Art Services.

Photographic Services
Photographic Services provides specialized photography to departmental, municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, along with the State Attorney and Public Defender Offices. Photographic Services also provides photograph enlargement services in various sizes, CD and DVD duplication services,  and digitization of film and transparencies.

Forensic Art Services
Forensic Art Services provides computer-generated or forensic artist renderings of subjects or witnesses involved in criminal investigations. Personnel can enhance photographs to assist in the identification of persons, vehicles, or articles involved in criminal investigations. They also have the ability to create two- and three-dimensional facial reconstructions of unidentified human remains that should bear a close resemblance to how the individual appeared in life. Lastly, they are able to alter the image of an individual in order to represent how that person has aged over a specific period of time.

Investigative Services
Support Services provides support and clerical assistance to Photographic Services. Personnel coordinate records-management and warehouse requests for photographs for older cases that are no longer available in current records. They also provide counter support for departmental, municipal, federal, and state law enforcement personnel requesting services, such as booking photographs, expunges and seals, driver's license information for investigations, and uploading photographs to the server when needed.

Digital Forensic Unit

The Digital Forensic Unit provides a variety of digital forensic laboratory and crime scene support services to the CSISS and to the greater municipal, state, and federal law enforcement agencies of Miami-Dade County. The Unit provides objective digital forensic laboratory examination services, crime scene response services (in matters involving digital evidence), and digital network forensic services.

The Unit provides objective examination services on digital evidence seized pursuant to administrative investigations. They provide data recovery services to the MDPD during incidents of catastrophic failure and/or data corruption. They are an integral part of the critical incident response team for the Miami-Dade County Information Technology Department, Enterprise Security Office. It provides consultation services and education to the investigators of Miami-Dade County, as well as for the Offices of the State Attorney, United States Attorney, MDPD Legal Bureau, and the County Attorney's office.

The Unit is an active partner laboratory providing digital forensic services for the United States Secret Service, Miami Electronic Crime Task Force, and the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, pursuant to Memorandums of Understanding existing between the task forces and the MDPD.

Body Worn Camera Unit

The Body Worn Camera Unit was implemented to improve police services, increase accountability for individual interactions, and enhance public safety. The Unit helps improve the high-quality public service expected of police officers and promote the sense of procedural justice that communities expect from their police departments and officers. The camera footage enables police departments to demonstrate transparency and openness in their interactions with members of the community. The Unit also processes public record requests related to body worn cameras.
