Distinguished Officer of the Month - August 2011

Detectives Eric Mourino and Andy Valdes

The Miami-Dade Police Department is pleased to announce that Detectives Eric Mourino and Andy Valdes have been awarded the Departmental Bronze Medal of Valor and selected Distinguished Officer of the Month for August 2011. Detective Mourino has been a member of the Department since July 2001 and Detective Valdes since July 2002, and are assigned the Narcotics Bureau.

On August 22, 2009, while working a Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) operation, Detectives Valdes and Mourino established a surveillance of a drug sale location at 7104 NW 14 Place.  Via the police radio, they relayed to the take-down teams that there were several buyers that were taken into custody.  During the surveillance, they observed three black males drive up to the location.  One subject remained in the vehicle and the other two subjects, armed with handguns, proceeded to execute an armed robbery at the location.  Detectives Valdes and Mourino confronted the subjects outside the building, at which time, one of the black males pointed a firearm at them. Fearing for their lives, Detectives Valdes and Mourino discharged their firearms at the armed robbers, who then fled in different directions.

Detectives Valdes and Mourino advised TNT detectives that the subjects that fled on foot were in the immediate area, and provided a description of travel.  Detective Jorge Rodriguez observed one subject matching the description running westbound from 7127 NW 16 Avenue.  The subject was taken into custody and a search incident to arrest revealed two sandwich bags containing 34 baggies of crack cocaine and $32 in U.S. currency.

Subsequently, Detectives Marcus Carey and Russell Giordano stopped a fleeing vehicle matching the description given by Detectives Valdes and Mourino.  The two subjects inside the vehicle were taken into custody without incident.  Detective Carey recovered a black ski mask from inside the vehicle floor board.  All three subjects were transported to the Northside Station for further investigation by Northside District General Investigations Unit (GIU) detectives.

After the subjects were apprehended, Detective John Saavedra retraced one of the subject's direction of travel and located a .45 caliber Ruger firearm, a black shirt, and gloves in a backyard.  Sergeant Alain Guilbaud also retraced the other subject's direction of travel and located a .38 caliber revolver belonging to one of the subjects in the front yard of a church.

Northside GIU Detectives Ana Suarez and Oscar Andino responded to the scene to investigate the incident and interview the subjects.  They were able to obtain full confessions from all three subjects.  Initially, the victims of the robbery were hesitant to report the robbery, but because of Detectives Suarez and Andino's investigative tenacity, they were able to get a detailed account of the robbery.  All three subjects are career criminals with violent felony pasts, including but not limited to, armed carjacking, robbery, and battery on a law enforcement officer.

The actions of these detectives exemplify outstanding bravery and courage in the furtherance of protection of life, enforcement of laws, and the preservation of public peace. Their actions were performed in the presence of life-threatening danger to prevent a criminal act and apprehend career criminals, going above and beyond the ordinary call of duty.
