Distinguished Officers of the Month - December 2010

Officers of the month: December
Officers Alexandra Jordan and Elizabeth Soler

The Miami-Dade Police Department is pleased to announce that Officers Alexandra Jordan and Elizabeth Soler have been awarded the departmental Gold Medal of Valor and Lifesaving Awards, and selected to share Distinguished Officer of the Month honors for December 2010.  Both officers joined the Department in December 2007, and both are assigned to the Northside District.

On August 31, 2010, at approximately 5:20 a.m., Officers Jordan and Soler were dispatched to a residential fire at 1301 NW 95 Terrace.  Upon arrival, they observed smoke emitting from the house and saw three occupants exiting the residence with personal effects.  One of the residents pointed toward the home and told them that there were people still inside.

The officers' concern for the safety and lives of those trapped inside the structure was stronger than their fear of possible personal danger.  Without hesitation, they entered the fiery building through the front door. As Officer Jordan was conducting a sweep, they heard screaming from the northeast bedroom.   Heading in that direction, they reached the room and located an elderly disabled couple who were helpless because they were both blind and bedridden.

Officer Soler helped the husband into his wheelchair and quickly evacuated him out of the building.  As Officer Jordan was assisting his fragile wife from her bed and into another wheelchair, Officer Soler returned to help.  Using extreme care, they extricated the remaining resident from the bedroom and evacuated the residence just as the first fire engine arrived. It should be noted that all this was accomplished while they braved the rapidly engulfing flames.

Once the two blind and disabled senior citizens knew that help had arrived, their relief must have been overwhelming.  Officer Jordan and Soler displayed unwavering and unparalleled courage in the face of extreme danger.  Their actions are a tribute to humanity and represent the true spirit of public service.
