How the Ordinance Works

Miami-Dade County Ordinance Section 21-276 places responsibility on the alarm user to prevent false burglar alarms. The ordinance applies to unincorporated Miami-Dade County residents, business and commercial owners. Each alarm user is responsible for monitoring the occurrence of false alarms on their premises. The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) shall notify the alarm user of false alarms. False alarm notices shall be provided by posting a notice on the premise or by mail.

  • All alarm systems must be registered annually with MDPD. The annual registration fee is $25
  • Separate registrations are required for each alarm system at a premise. 
  • Every registered alarm user is allowed one false alarm without penalty, within their registration period of one year.  False alarm fines are imposed beginning with the second false alarm within a registration period.
