Five Arrested in Connection to a Cargo Theft Ring

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) announces the arrests of five Miami-Dade County residents responsible for over 1.2 million dollars in 8 different cargo thefts throughout the State of Florida.

The arrests are the result of an investigation by the Miami Metropolitan Major Theft task Force (MMMTTF) which consists of the following agencies - Federal Bureau of Investigation, MDPD, City of Doral Police Department, City of Medley Police Department, Florida Highway Patrol and Palm Beach Sheriff's Office.

According to investigators this investigation commenced in September of 2014 when they identified a group of individuals who had formed a cargo theft organization.  These individuals typically traveled from Miami-Dade County in a rental vehicle to search for tractor trailers they could easily steal.  Once the defendants stole both the cargo and trailers, they returned to Miami to sell the stolen property on the black market.

On January 2016, four of the five subjects were taken into custody at Jacksonville, Florida with the assistance of the Central Florida Cargo Theft Task Force shortly after they stole two tractor trailers with loads of sugar and tires totaling 230 thousand dollars.

The fifth subject, Julio Vega was arrested today by MMMTTF and charged accordingly.
