Kidnapping/Police-Involved Shooting

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

Miami-Dade Police Department, Homicide Bureau detectives are investigating a police-involved shooting.  According to investigators, the subject is the ex-boyfriend of victim, Bernita Jones.  Earlier this morning, they were involved in an altercation at 14840 Naranja Lakes Blvd. Circle.  The argument escalated and he kidnapped her at gunpoint and fled on foot.  An off-duty, West Miami Police Officer in the area confronted the subject at SW 278 Street and South Dixie Highway.  The subject shot at the officer, and struck her vehicle.  The officer returned fire but the subject fled on foot with the victim.  A perimeter was immediately established.  Through investigative means, detectives were able to locate the subject at a relative's house at 15272 SW 281 Street, #803, Miami, Florida.  The detectives learned he was inside the residence along with the listed victims #2-5.  The Special Response Team (SRT), including the Hostage Negotiators, responded and established a line of communication with the subject.  As SRT was making entry into the residence, they discovered the subject inside, suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.  Subject expired on scene.  None of the victims were harmed during the incident.

The investigation continues.
