Attempted Theft/Police Pursuit

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

The Miami-Dade Police Department, Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a police pursuit.  According to detectives, a call was received regarding an attempted theft in progress at the above listed location.  A BOLO was issued with the subject and vehicle description.  A uniformed officer observed a vehicle matching the subject vehicle description and conducted a traffic stop at SW 186 Street and the Busway.  The officer walked up to the cab to address the driver. When the officer was at the window, the subject turned the wheel towards the officer and fled, causing the box portion of the truck to strike the officer's hand.

A pursuit ensued, during which the subject struck several civilian and police vehicles and showed no regard for public safety.  Miami-Dade Police, along with City of Miami Police, officers were able to contain the vehicle at the intersection of SW 25 Avenue and 1 Street.  The subject failed to comply with the officers' orders to exit the vehicle.  During the process of extricating the subject from the vehicle, a Miami-Dade officer was pinned between a patrol car and the box of the truck due to the truck moving forward.   Another officer realized this and moved the patrol vehicle back to release the officer.  The subject was extricated from the cab of the truck and was taken into custody.

The Miami-Dade officer was transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital, suffering from a broken leg, along with a City of Miami Police who officer suffered a laceration to his hand. The subject was also transported to Jackson Memorial Hospital with minor cuts and bruises.
