At approximately 8:30 a.m., a MDPD officer observed a body of a black male suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the upper torso lying along the canal bank.  The black male was pronounced deceased on the scene.  The body was later identified to be the missing person, Christian Joseph Mckenzie.

On January 23, 2015, the investigation led detectives to the recovery of a firearm owned by the victim.  The firearm was submitted to the Crime Laboratory for examination, where it was determined that the victim was killed with his own firearm.  Between physical evidence and witness statements detectives were able to obtain an arrest warrant for Juan Salgado, who was already incarcerated for unrelated charges and charged accordingly.
