Correctional Officer Shot During Robbery


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 

The Miami-Dade Police Department, Robbery Bureau is investigating an armed robbery that resulted in an off-duty correctional officer shot.  According to investigators, the victim, Juan Guellmes, a 28-year veteran of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department, was cleaning his vehicle outside his residence when several armed subjects approached him.  The subjects fired multiple shots, striking Officer Guellmes and took personal property before fleeing the scene.  Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene and airlifted the officer to Kendall Regional Trauma Center.  Officer Guellmes is listed in stable condition.

UPDATE #1:  The subject(s) were armed with a black handgun and removed a gold chain from the victim’s neck. A struggle ensued between the victim and the subject(s) and several shots were fired.  The victim was shot twice, once in the stomach and once in the shoulder. The subject(s) then fled northbound on S.W. 109 Avenue. The subject(s) were possibly dropped off in the area in a dark gray or silver Ford Taurus with driver’s side damage.

UPDATE #2:  As investigators continue to follow all leads, they have identified and located the driver of the vehicle involved in the armed robbery.  According to investigators, on September 03, 2014, the subject, Roderick Everett, was located at 19800 S.W. 110 Court , Apt. #116.  During his interview, Everett confessed to his involvement in the robbery.  The case is still active and ongoing and investigators urge anyone with information regarding this case to contact Crimestoppers at (305) 471-TIPS (8477).
