The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Traffic Homicide Unit, is investigating a crash involving a marked police vehicle and a 2005 Toyota Corolla that occurred shortly after 5:30 this morning that resulted in a MDPD K-9 detective being airlifted to Ryder Trauma with critical injuries.
According to investigators, the marked MDPD vehicle was traveling southbound on Okeechobee Road, while the Toyota Corolla was traveling northbound. The driver of the Toyota attempted to make a left turn onto NW 138 Street and struck the police vehicle, causing it to crash into a concreate barrier wall.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and airlifted the detective to the Ryder Trauma Center at Jackson Memorial Hospital with a possible broken clavicle and ribs. The driver of the Toyota Corolla was transported to Palmetto Hospital with complaints of leg pain.
The detective’s canine was uninjured, but transported to Knowles Animal Clinic as a precaution.
