The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a shooting involving two Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) officers.
The shooting took place shortly after one o’clock Monday afternoon, when MDPD officers observed a vehicle traveling northbound on NW 57 Avenue, which was earlier reported stolen from a car dealership located at 16825 NW 57 Avenue.
Officers followed the vehicle and approached it when the driver stopped at the traffic signal at the intersection of NW 57 Avenue and 183 Street (Miami Gardens Drive). The officers ordered the driver to exit the vehicle and when he refused, one of the officers smashed the driver side window. The driver then armed himself with a machete and began making threats to the officers. Officers then discharged their firearms striking him.
The driver was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased.
The officers were not injured.
FDLE is the lead agency regarding MDPD police-involved shootings.
