The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate a traffic crash involving a marked police vehicle.
Investigators say that a MDPD officer was dispatched to the area of SW 16 Street and 107 Avenue, regarding a suspicious incident. Once arrival, the officer was conducting her investigation, when she observed her vehicle drive away. The officer began making notifications that her vehicle was stolen, when a call was dispatched over police frequency, of a marked police vehicle involved in a traffic accident, at SW 99 Avenue and 24 Street. Officers arriving on the scene were able to determine that the police vehicle was the same car taken minutes earlier.
According to detectives, the subject was driving the stolen marked police vehicle eastbound on SW 24 Street, when he lost control of the vehicle and went onto the westbound lanes, sideswiping a Honda Civic and was then T-boned by a Chevy Suburban, also driving westbound.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and extinguished a fire from the police vehicle and pronounced the subject driving the police vehicle deceased on scene. The drivers of the Honda Civic and Chevy Suburban were treated and released on scene. The passengers of the Chevy Suburban, a mother, was transported to Kendall Regional Trauma Center and her two children were transported to Nicklaus Children’s Hospital. All three victims were in serious but stable condition.
