The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is conducting an investigation into the shooting of two MDPD detectives assigned to the Homicide Street Violence Task Force, who were part of a multiagency gang enforcement sweep in northwest Miami-Dade County.
According to detectives, shortly after 10:00 p.m., on Monday night (March 27, 2017), the two detectives were inside of an unmarked police vehicle within an apartment complex, located at 1937 NW 60 Street, conducting surveillance for gang activity. The undercover detectives were ambushed by at least two armed subjects, who approached the unmarked police vehicle and began shooting at the detectives. One detective sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and the other sustained a gunshot wound to the arm. One of the two detectives was able to return fire, it is unknown if a subject was shot.
A responding officer coming to their aide arrived on scene, placed the wounded detectives into his unmarked police vehicle and transported them to Jackson Ryder Trauma Center in stable condition.
Officers from multiple agencies responded to assist in the search for the shooters, who remain at large.
The investigation continues.
UPDATE #1: The detectives involved in the police-involved shooting have been identified as Terence White and Charles Woods. Detective White is listed in stable condition and Detective Woods has been treated and released.
UPDATE #2: Investigators have arrested Damian Antwan Thompson following several CrimeStoppers tips in connection with the Police Involved Shooting.
Damian Antwan Thompson has been transported to TGK.
