Strong Armed Robbery of a Tourist

Need to Identify

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Robbery Bureau, is seeking the assistance of the community in identifying a male taxi driver who beat and robbed a tourist in southwest Miami-Dade.

Investigators say, the victim, a tourist traveling from Denver, Colorado, exited a club in area of N. Miami Avenue and NW 11 Street, at approximately 3:30 a.m., on Sunday, March 19, 2017.  The victim proceeded to a Yellow Taxi Cab which was already parked in front of the club.  Unfamiliar with addresses in Miami, the victim requested the taxi driver (subject) drive him to the Zoo Miami area of Miami-Dade County.  As the taxi driver approached the desired destination, 14445 SW 122 Place, the victim recognized the apartment complex where he was visiting, and asked to be dropped off across the street.  The victim exited the cab and pulled out his wallet to pay for his $70.00 fare.  In the process of gathering the fare money, the driver became irate, exited the vehicle, and began running toward the victim in an aggressive manner.  In fear of safety, the victim ran toward the apartment complex while screaming for help. The taxi driver caught up to the victim and tackled him, causing the victim to fall to the ground. While on the ground the subject placed the victim in a chokehold, beating him repeatedly. During the confrontation the subject removed the victim’s wallet from his pants pocket, which contained $800.00 in U.S. currency.  The subject then ran back to the taxi cab and fled in an unknown direction.

During the attack the victim sustained abrasions to his face.  Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded and treated the victim on scene.

The investigation continues.
