Traffic Crash Involving A Marked Police Vehicle


(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 

The Miami-Dade Police Department, Traffic Homicide Unit continues to investigate a traffic crash involving a marked police vehicle.  Investigators say that the subject, David Merini, was driving a Chevy Malibu eastbound on S.W. 8 Street.  As he approached S.W. 32 Avenue he lost control of his vehicle swerving onto oncoming traffic.  He then struck multiple vehicle causing his Chevy Malibu to turn on its side as it continues slide eastbound on the westbound lanes.  Merini's vehicle then struck a Honda Element that was at the intersection beginning to proceed westbound as the light turned green.  Due to the impact, the Honda Element was then pushed back into the marked police vehicle.  Both the driver of the Honda Element and the off-duty officer were transported to a local hospital.  The driver the Honda Element, Julio Aira, was transported for a medical evaluation and the officer was transported for a hand and wrist injury.  No other drivers were reported injured.  Upon further investigation conducted by the D.U.I Unit, it was determined that David Merini was driving under the influence and charged accordingly.
