Traffic Crash

Driver arrested for D.U.I.

(Miami-Dade County, FL) --

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a traffic crash that injured two MDPD police officers.

According to investigators, two officers in a marked police vehicle, were traveling westbound on SW 88 Street (Kendall Drive).  As the police vehicle entered the intersection of SW 152 Avenue,  a Chevy Tahoe, traveling at a high rate of speed, rear-ended the police vehicle.  The driver of the Tahoe then drove over the median and traveled westbound on the eastbound lanes, fleeing from the scene.  Officers that were on an unrelated traffic stop at SW 157 Avenue and 88 Street, observed the Tahoe, stopped it, and took the driver, Michael Arana, into custody.  The officers noticed signs of impairment and requested the D.U.I. unit to respond.  Michael Arana refused sobriety tests and was charged accordingly.  The officer driving the police vehicle sustained back injuries and was transported to Baptist West Hospital; she has been released from the hospital.  The passenger was airlifted to Kendall Regional Trauma Center.  He sustained a laceration to his head and is listed in stable condition. Michael Arana did not sustain any injuries.
