(Miami-Dade County, FL) -- 

The Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD), Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a crash that took the life of a Miami-Dade police officer. 

According to investigators, the officer was patrolling the area on a MDPD All-Terrain Vehicle, as a result of community concerns involving criminal activity.  During the enforcement initiative, a crash occurred resulting in critical injuries to the officer.  Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded to the scene and transported the officer to Jackson South Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. 

The officer was a 15 year veteran of the Department, assigned to the South District, Neighborhood Resource Unit.

Additional information will be provided as it becomes available.

Update #1: The officer has been identified as Jermaine Brown, and has been listed above.

 

“It is with a heavy heart that I can now confirm the tragic death of Miami-Dade Police Department Officer Jermaine Brown. Assigned to our South District, Officer Brown was fatally injured while conducting an enforcement detail near a canal bank.  Officer Brown lost his life while protecting our community, as he responded to assist fellow officers. We ask that our Miami-Dade community keep his family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this tragic and sudden loss.”
