PortMiami and Florida East Coast Freight Rail Coming Back to Miami!

(MIAMI, September 30, 2013) - In a major boost to South Florida's cargo and logistics industries Florida East Coast Railway (FEC) is restoring freight rail service between PortMiami and major U.S. markets. The Port has been without on-dock rail service since 2005 when Hurricane Wilma destroyed the Port's rail bridge, but thanks to a federal grant the tracks have been restored and regular service is scheduled to begin next month.

The new PortMiami-FEC partnership will allow shippers to reach 70% of the U.S. population in four days or less by linking the Port to the national railway system.

Media are invited to join Florida East Coast Railway and PortMiami officials on Tuesday, October 1 from 4–6 p.m., for the first train trip between the Hialeah Rail yard and the Port and see how cargo containers will move on and off Port as Miami grows it container cargo business.

The tour will give media representatives an opportunity to experience first-hand the new on-dock rail service as well as other infrastructure improvements currently underway at PortMiami including the deepening of the port’s main channel to -50 feet, the completion of the port tunnel, and four new cranes currently on the way to the port.
