Foreign Trade Zone

The U.S. Department of Commerce has granted Miami-Dade County the authority to establish Foreign Trade Zone No. 281 that stretches north from Southwest Eighth Street to the Broward County Line. The new zone will be among the nation's first to operate under the new Alternative Site Framework’s streamlined process.

What is a foreign trade zone?

The purpose of an foreign trade zone (FTZ) is to expedite and encourage foreign commerce. FTZ sites are considered to be outside of the U.S. Customs territory, although physically in the U.S., for purposes of duty payments. Companies that operate in foreign trade zones can defer, reduce or eliminate customs duties.

What does FTZ 281 mean to Miami?
  • FTZ benefits will be delivered at the Port's doorstep as we prepare our infrastructure to accommodate post Panamax-class cargo vessels.
  • PortMiami will operate the zone in a manner that will permit property owners and operators located in the zone seek approval from the County to bring foreign trade zone benefits to their location.
  • FTZ 281 can maximize Miami-Dade County’s international trade advantages.
