Carnival Corporation launches fathom, a new travel concept, sailing from PortMiami

(MIAMI – June 4, 2015)  Carnival Corporation & plc, today announced the launch of a new social impact travel brand called fathom.  The new travel concept offers consumers meaningful impact travel experiences working alongside locals as they tackle community needs. The homeport for fathom will be PortMiami, beginning in April 2016.

In April 2016, fathom will embark on seven-day voyages from PortMiami aboard the MV Adonia, a 710-passenger vessel redeployed from Carnival Corporation’s P&O Cruises.  Depending on their passions, interests and skills, travelers will have the opportunity to choose from a range of social impact activities and experiences both onboard and onshore. What sets fathom apart is the long-term, systematic partnership approach with its partner countries paired with the unique business model that allows for sustained impact and lasting development.

"We're excited about the launch of our new fathom brand, and we're proud to be working closely with PortMiami to realize this new vision for social impact travel," said Arnold Donald, CEO of Carnival Corporation & plc. "We know there is pent up demand from consumers who want to make meaningful contributions to the world, but don't know exactly where to start. So we're very pleased that fathom will give travelers the chance to work alongside local communities to make positive, lasting impacts on a scale that has never been seen before in the travel industry."

Donald added: "In creating a new social impact travel category, we see great potential to improve lives and strengthen global communities, while serving a new market of travelers who will be able to embark from Miami to take an enriching and transformational journey of a lifetime."

“Modern cruising began from PortMiami more than 40 years ago,” said Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez.   “Miami-Dade County is an incubator for many new innovative ideas and concepts.  It is fitting for Carnival’s new social impact travel concept to launch from PortMiami.”

“We are honored that our partners at Carnival chose PortMiami as homeport for the launch of fathom” said PortMiami Director Juan M. Kuryla.  “We look forward to collaborating with Carnival to ensure that the travelers’ experience starts the minute they arrive at our Port.   Cruising from Miami will add yet another unique experience for the launch of such a one-of-a-kind travel concept.”

“We are extremely proud to be the homeport of Carnival’s first fathom sailing,” said Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, Chairman of the Trade and Tourism Committee that oversees PortMiami. “We are thankful to Carnival for entrusting PortMiami with their new social impact travel brand.”
