About the TIGER II Grant
This pertains to a Freight Rail Transportation project that will:
- reconnect the Port of Miami with the Florida East Coast's (FEC) Hialeah rail yard and thus to the national rail network;
- enable the Port to overcome certain land constraints by use of an inland intermodal logistics transfer facility; and
- provide direct access to the Atlanta market for new Panamax vessels calling on the Port of Miami after 2014.
- In addition to facilitating growth, this project will reduce truck-generated congestion and prepare the rail corridor for future passenger traffic.
The Port of Miami is the 11th largest container port in the United States - and the largest in the state of Florida - yet it has minimal railway access. The funds from this grant will complete the investment funds necessary to reconstruct and rehabilitate the existing underutilized rail line from the Port of Miami to the main FEC railway line, and to construct an efficient on-port intermodal yard with direct access to the national rail network.
