The Miami-Dade County Park and Recreation Department and Miami-Dade Department of Cultural Affairs through its Art in Public Places Program request qualifications from professional artists and/or artist teams to create a landmark artwork for the Kendall Soccer Park. The selected artist will design a unique artwork that will contribute to the identity of this park and bring an unexpected and delightful encounter for visitors entering the facility.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Kendall Soccer Park
8011 SW 127th Avenue Miami, Florida.
Consisting of five regulation size artificial turf soccer fields, the Kendall Soccer Park is home to recreational soccer leagues and hosts a variety of classes, camps and competitive games. The park is open from sunrise to sunset and has a field center with concession on site. The Kendall Soccer Park is situated in an area of high vehicular traffic, adjacent to a residential area.
Opportunities for Public Art (Click here to download site plan and images)
Site Specific Artwork for Entrance of Kendall Soccer Park
This is a special opportunity for artists to design and create a permanent large-scale work for one of Miami-Dade County’s most active parks. An open space area near the entrance of the facility has been designated as the potential site for placement of the artwork (Please refer to attached site plan). The artwork should be innovative, convey the spirit and sportsmanship of soccer and prominently identify the park within the streetscape. The artist designed feature will serve as the main focal point of the park and will welcome visitors as they enter the playing fields. Artists are encouraged to create an interactive, functional work that uses innovative materials and structures.
In choosing exterior materials, it will be important for the artist to consider the permanence of all artwork and other design elements and how they function in Miami-Dade’s harsh sunlight, winds and rains.

ABOUT MIAMI-DADE ART IN PUBLIC PLACES
Art in Public Places is a program of the Miami-Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs responsible for the commission and purchase of artworks by contemporary artists in all media. One of the first public art programs in the country, Miami-Dade Art in Public Places was established in 1973 with the passage of an ordinance allocating 1.5% of construction cost of new county buildings for the purchase or commission of artworks, educational programs and collection maintenance. The Art Trust Fund is administered by a County Commission-appointed citizens’ board, the Art in Public Places Trust, in consultation with its Professional Advisory Committee. THE PROCESS
Selection Process It is anticipated that a three-member group of arts professionals drawn from the Professional Advisory Committee (PAC) will identify a small number of finalists who will be paid a $500 honorarium to develop specific proposals for the central public plaza. The primary criteria for finalist selection will be previous artistic accomplishment as demonstrated in images of previously completed artwork, public art experience, and/or initial approach to the project as demonstrated in the preliminary statement. If appropriate, the PAC reserves the right to recommend artists directly from initially submitted applications.
Selection Panel Appointed by the Art in Public Places Trust, the PAC is a national panel composed of professionals in the field of art, public art, architecture, art education, art history, or architectural history. A three-member group will be drawn from the PAC to review all artists’ work responding to this request and recommend one or more artists for commission by the Trust.
