PROJECT DESCRIPTION
City of Miami Gardens
Betty T. Ferguson Recreational Complex - Aquatic Facility
3000 NW 199 St., Miami Gardens, FL 33056

Located just two blocks away from Sun Life Stadium, in the central region of Miami Gardens, Florida, the 56,000 square foot community center will house a state-of-the-art gym, dance studios, aquatic center, basketball court, computer lab, auditorium, arts and crafts classrooms, and other recreational spaces. Situated on 24 acres of pristine land, the community center is adjacent to a lake, which provides a beautiful backdrop for the world-class running track, artificial turf athletic field and a sanctuary for burrowing owls.

A top priority of the City of Miami Gardens is to re-establish the parks system as an integral part of the community, providing for the needs of all ages. Funding for the Miami Gardens Community Center was made possible by the Office of Safe Neighborhood Parks, Building Better Communities General Obligation Bond, Quality Neighborhood Improvement Program, NFL Youth Football Fund, Miami-Dade County and City of Miami Gardens funds.

Opportunities for Public Art

Acoustical Panel System for Aquatic Center

The architecture of the Community Center was inspired by the Miami Modernist (MiMo) movement, an architectural style that originated in Miami and Miami Beach during the 1950s and 1960s. Known for adding glamour, flamboyance and whimsy to otherwise stark, minimalistic efficient buildings, Miami Modernism is often used to describe the work of famed architect Morris Lapidus.

It is envisioned that an artist will design a series of suspended acoustical panels for the 8,313 square foot indoor aquatic center. The “L” shaped pool, which features a bright yellow 12’ circular slide and 17’ soaring ceilings, will be utilized for recreational swimming and aquatic aerobics. In developing the design for the panels, artists may wish to consider the aesthetic qualities of the MiMo influenced architecture of the center.

Functionality of the panels is of upmost importance. The artist designed panels must be durable and manufactured from a material that will resist the corrosive environment consistent with an indoor pool facility and absorb sound produced by the sound system and guests of the facility.  It is imperative that the selected artist work collaboratively with a reputable panel manufacturer with indoor pool installation experience to implement the design and installation of the acoustical panel system. It is also preferred that the panel system be install predominately above the concrete deck area surrounding the edge of the pool for ease of installation and maintenance.

The artist is responsible for fully developing an artwork within the allocated $156,215 budget which must be inclusive of design, engineering, fabrication, installation, and any other cost associated with the implementation of the art project.

The primary criteria for finalist selection will be previous artistic accomplishment as demonstrated in images of previously completed artwork, public art experience, and/or initial approach to the project as demonstrated in the preliminary statement. If appropriate, the PAC reserves the right to recommend artists directly from initially submitted applications.
