Manhattan Schist: Portrait of a Rock

Robert Lawrence Lobe (American, b.1945)
Manhattan Schist: Portrait of a Rock, 1977
Aluminum

Long-term loan from Miami-Dade Art in Public Places, gift of the J. Patrick Lannan Foundation

Lobe interprets and manipulates nature as the source of inspiration for Manhattan Schist: Portrait of a Rock. To create the piece, sheets of aluminum were hammered over the surface of rocks and other naturally occurring elements, producing a sculpture which transforms a seemingly solid mass into an organic, weightless structure.

Other examples of Lobe’s work can be seen in the collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, NY; the Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; and Storm King Art Center, Mountainville, NY.
